What Extra Content Does Extended Include?

The Extended curriculum includes everything in the Core syllabus plus additional "supplement" content. Some examples of Extended-only content in the 2026–2028 syllabus:

  • Topic 3: water potential and its effect on osmosis
  • Topic 8: details of translocation in phloem and the role of companion cells
  • Topic 9: tissue fluid formation and the lymphatic system
  • Topic 13: details of ADH and osmoregulation
  • Topic 14: detailed hormone interactions and negative feedback
  • Topic 17: codominance, sex linkage, and pedigree diagrams

The exact Extended-only content is highlighted in the syllabus document with a blue "E" marker.

Which Tier Should You Choose?

Consider these factors:

  • Choose Extended if you are aiming for grades A* to B, are confident in Biology, plan to study A-level Biology or Medicine, and your school teacher recommends it
  • Choose Core if you find Biology challenging, want to secure a solid C grade, or your teacher advises it based on your current performance

In Malaysia, most international schools enter strong science students for Extended by default. If you are unsure, discuss with your teacher: it is usually possible to switch tiers before the final entry deadline (around February of the exam year).
