Definition
A process that requires oxygen. Aerobic respiration uses oxygen to completely break down glucose into carbon dioxide and water, releasing a large amount of energy. The equation is: glucose + oxygen produces carbon dioxide + water (plus energy released).
What to include in an exam answer
Aerobic respiration releases MORE energy per molecule of glucose than anaerobic respiration. In exam answers, always state that aerobic respiration requires oxygen. Know both the word equation and balanced symbol equation.
Example in context
Write the balanced symbol equation for aerobic respiration: C6H12O6 + 6O2 produces 6CO2 + 6H2O (plus energy released).
