Eukaryote

Definition

An organism whose cells contain a true nucleus enclosed by a nuclear envelope, and membrane-bound organelles such as mitochondria and, in plants, chloroplasts. Animals, plants, fungi and protoctists are all eukaryotes.

What to include in an exam answer

In classification questions, being eukaryotic is a key feature that separates animals, plants, fungi and protoctists from bacteria. State 'true nucleus' and 'membrane-bound organelles'.

State one feature that all eukaryotic cells have in common (1 mark): They all have a true nucleus enclosed by a nuclear envelope.
