Definition
The gradual change in the inherited characteristics of a population over many generations, which may result in the formation of new species. Evolution occurs through natural selection, where organisms with favourable characteristics are more likely to survive and reproduce.
What to include in an exam answer
Evolution is a change in the population over time, not in individual organisms. Individuals do not evolve; populations do. Link to natural selection as the mechanism.
