Biological drawing conventions

Draw large enough to show detail, use a sharp pencil and clear single lines, and avoid sketching, shading or colouring. Keep proportions accurate. Label lines should be ruled, horizontal where possible, touch the structure and never cross.

The magnification formula

Magnification = image size ÷ actual size. Rearrange to actual size = image size ÷ magnification or image size = magnification × actual size. Magnification is a ratio and has no unit.

Convert units before dividing

1 mm = 1000 µm. Convert both measurements to the same unit before using the formula. If an image is measured in millimetres and the real specimen is given in micrometres, convert one first; otherwise the result is wrong by a factor of 1000.

Scale bars

Use the scale-bar length and its stated real value to calculate magnification, or compare the specimen length with the scale bar. Measure both with the same ruler and show the working.
