Trace the complete route

Learn the route as one continuous loop: body → vena cava → right atrium → right ventricle → pulmonary artery → lungs → pulmonary vein → left atrium → left ventricle → aorta → body.

Arteries carry blood away from the heart and veins return it. Pulmonary vessels are named by direction, not oxygen content.

Valves and one-way flow

Atrioventricular valves lie between atria and ventricles. Semilunar valves lie at the exits to the pulmonary artery and aorta. Pressure differences open and close them, preventing backflow.

When ventricles contract, the atrioventricular valves close and semilunar valves open. Do not write that valves actively pump blood.

Why the left ventricle is thickest

The left ventricle pumps blood through the systemic circulation to the whole body, requiring high pressure and therefore a thick muscular wall. The right ventricle pumps only to the nearby lungs at lower pressure. Atria move blood a short distance into ventricles, so their walls are thinner.

Single and double circulation

In a fish’s single circulation, blood passes through the heart once in one complete circuit. In mammalian double circulation, it passes through the heart twice: pulmonary and systemic circuits. Returning oxygenated blood to the heart allows it to be pumped to the body at higher pressure.
