How Mechanical Digestion Helps Chemical Digestion

Mechanical digestion does not break any chemical bonds, but it is essential for efficient chemical digestion. By breaking food into smaller pieces, it increases the surface area available for enzymes to act on. The larger the surface area, the faster the rate of enzyme action. Without chewing and churning, chemical digestion would be far too slow to process a meal efficiently.

The Role of Bile

Bile is sometimes confusing because it aids digestion but is not an enzyme. Bile is produced by the liver, stored in the gall bladder, and released into the small intestine. It has two roles:

  • Emulsification of fats: bile breaks large fat droplets into smaller droplets, increasing the surface area for lipase to act on. This is a form of mechanical digestion (physical change, no chemical bonds broken)
  • Neutralisation: bile is alkaline and neutralises the acidic chyme from the stomach, creating the optimal pH for enzymes in the small intestine to work
