Definition
Using natural resources in a way that meets present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainable practices include replanting forests, regulating fishing quotas and using renewable energy sources.
What to include in an exam answer
Sustainability questions often focus on specific examples: sustainable forestry (replanting trees at the same rate they are cut), sustainable fishing (catch quotas, net mesh size regulations), and renewable energy.
Example in context
Explain how forests can be managed sustainably (2 marks): Trees that are felled should be replaced by planting new ones at the same rate. This ensures that the forest is maintained for future generations and continues to absorb carbon dioxide.
