Why biology rewards a syllabus-first method
IGCSE Biology is a defined-content subject. Cambridge tells you, statement by statement, exactly what you can be asked. That makes the official syllabus the single best revision tool you own, and re-reading a textbook one of the weakest. The textbook decides what to tell you; the syllabus decides what gets marked. A textbook will happily spend three pages on detail that earns one mark, and one sentence on something worth several, because it is teaching biology, not the exam.
So the first move is not to open a book. It is to get the 0610 syllabus checklist and treat every statement as a thing you must be able to do, not just recognise. "Describe the structure of a leaf and explain how it is adapted for photosynthesis" is a task. If you cannot perform that task from memory, that statement is red. If you can do it but slowly, it is amber. If it is automatic, it is green. Your whole revision job is turning red and amber statements green, in priority order, and the colour coding tells you at a glance where the next hour should go.
This is also a confidence tool. Biology can feel like an endless ocean of facts, and that vagueness is what makes students anxious and unfocused. The syllabus closes the list: there is a finite, knowable set of statements, and you can see yourself completing it. Tick a statement green and it is genuinely done, not just "covered".
This is why two students who study the same hours get different grades. The one who revises against the syllabus knows precisely what they cannot yet do and spends every hour on a weakness. The one who re-reads notes feels productive, returns to material they already half-know because it is comfortable, and learns almost nothing new, because recognition is not recall.
Active recall and spacing, applied to biology
Active recall means retrieving information from a blank page, not reviewing it on a full one. The closed-book test is the learning event; reading is just preparation for it. In biology this is unusually powerful because so much of the subject is structured: processes, sequences, definitions and labelled diagrams that you either can or cannot reproduce.
A simple recall session for one topic:
- Cover your notes. On a blank sheet, write everything you know about the topic. This is sometimes called a brain dump or blurt.
- Open your notes and the syllabus checklist. Mark what you missed in a different colour.
- The gaps, not the whole topic, are your revision for next time.
The discomfort of staring at a blank page is the point. That struggle to retrieve is exactly what strengthens the memory, which is why recall feels harder than re-reading and works far better. Re-reading is easy and forgettable; retrieval is effortful and sticky.
Spaced repetition is the second half. A topic revised today should be re-tested in a few days, then a week or so later, then before the exam. Each successful recall pushes the next review further out, so easy material stops eating your time and weak material keeps coming back. You do not need software for this; a dated list of "topics to re-test" works. Turn your notes into questions
Most students write notes and then re-read them. Re-reading is the problem. The fix is to convert every note into a question you have to answer, so revision is always retrieval.
Practically, as you make or review notes, write the question in the margin and the answer in the body:
- Note: "Active transport moves substances against a concentration gradient using energy from respiration." Question: "How does active transport differ from diffusion?"
- Note: a labelled heart diagram. Question: "Draw and label the four chambers and name the vessel carrying blood to the lungs."
- Note: the enzyme temperature curve. Question: "Explain the shape of the rate-against-temperature graph above 40 C."
Notice the verbs. "Explain" and "describe" are command words, and writing your questions in command-word form quietly trains the exact skill examiners reward. A note you can recite is worth little; a question you can answer cold is worth a mark.
The past-paper loop: do, mark, log
Past questions are not the final test of revision; they are the main vehicle for it. Start them early, topic by topic, not just full papers at the end. The loop has three steps and you repeat it until the exam.
- Do. Answer questions on the topic you have just revised, under no-notes conditions. Begin with topic-sorted questions while content is fresh, then move to whole papers as exams approach. Our past-papers hub explains where to find them and how to sequence them.
- Mark with the real mark scheme. This is where the marks live. Mark yourself strictly against Cambridge's wording: if the scheme says "denatured" and you wrote "killed", that is not a mark. The mark scheme is also a vocabulary list of exactly the terms you are expected to produce.
- Log the error. Keep a running error log: the question, what you wrote, what the scheme wanted, and the fix in one line. Re-read it before each session.
Your error log will repeat itself, and that repetition is gold. Most lost marks are a handful of recurring habits, the ones gathered in our common exam mistakes guide, and fixing five habits can move a grade without learning any new biology.
A note on honesty while marking: it is tempting to award yourself the mark because you "knew what you meant". Do not. The examiner cannot read your intention, only your words, so mark exactly as they would. If you wrote "the cell takes in water" where the scheme wanted "water moves in by osmosis", that is not a mark, and pretending otherwise just hides the gap. Strict self-marking is uncomfortable for a week and then transformative, because it trains you to write the way the mark scheme rewards.
Do questions on a topic the same day you revise it, while the content is fresh, then again a week later as part of your spaced review. The second attempt, after a gap, is the one that tells you whether the learning actually stuck or merely felt familiar at the time.
Revising the practical content (do not leave it last)
The practical paper is twenty per cent of your grade, and it is the part students most often cram into the final weekend, then lose easy marks on. Schedule it weekly from early on. The good news is that the required-practical and skills content is highly repetitive across past papers, so it rewards revision more reliably than almost anything else.
What to drill:
- Food tests with exact reagents and colour changes (Benedict's, iodine, biuret, ethanol emulsion). Guaranteed material; learn them word-perfect.
- Variables: identifying the independent, dependent and control variables, and stating what you would keep constant and why.
- Reading apparatus and tables, recording results, and plotting and reading graphs.
- Improvements and sources of error: the "how would you make this a fair test / improve reliability" answers, which follow predictable patterns.
Treat practical questions exactly like theory questions in your loop: do them, mark them, log the wording. The mark scheme phrasing for method and improvement questions is especially worth memorising.
Stay Core- or Extended-aware while you revise
The syllabus separates Core content from the Extended supplement, and the checklist flags which statements are which. Revise the route you are actually entered for. Extended candidates must cover everything; Core candidates can skip the supplement statements entirely and should not waste time on them.

Spacing it sensibly over the weeks
A method only works if it is spread out. Cramming a topic the night before an exam produces a feeling of knowing that has usually evaporated by morning. The same hours spaced across weeks, with re-tests, produce durable recall. That is the whole argument for starting early and revisiting.
A workable weekly shape: most days, one topic through the recall-and-question routine; one or two sessions a week on past questions and your error log; one weekly session reserved for practical content.
