The week and night before

The final days are for consolidation, not new content. Trying to learn a fresh topic the night before usually costs you sleep and rarely earns a mark. Instead:

  • Do light active recall. Run through your error log, your flashcards and a few definitions. Quick retrieval, not hours of new study.
  • Skim past-paper questions you have already done, especially the ones you got wrong, so the corrections are fresh.
  • Protect your sleep. A rested brain recalls and reasons far better than a crammed, tired one. A late night of revision that costs you sharpness in the exam is a bad trade.
  • Pack the night before so the morning is calm: check the start time, the venue and your equipment.

If you are still days out and not yet ready, this page is not the priority. Go back to the revision method or the 8-week plan and use the days you have.

What to bring

Equipment problems are avoidable mark-losers. Pack a clear case with spares:

  • Pencils (HB) and a sharpener for diagrams. Biology drawings and labelling lines are done in pencil, with single clean lines, not sketchy ones.
  • A ruler for label lines, tables and graph axes, and for measuring on the practical or alternative-to-practical paper.
  • Black or dark blue pens (and a spare) for written answers, plus an eraser.
  • A calculator. Cambridge permits a calculator in IGCSE Biology, so bring an approved one and use it for magnification and percentage-change calculations rather than risking mental arithmetic. Check your school's specific guidance on the allowed model.
  • A clear water bottle with the label removed, where permitted, and a watch you can read for timing, if the room has no clear clock.

Reading the paper and pacing each component

Each paper has a different rhythm, so know which one you are sitting and pace accordingly. The full structure is in our 0610 exam format guide; here is how to run each on the day.

  • Multiple choice (40 questions, 45 minutes). That is just over a minute per question. Answer the ones you know quickly, mark anything uncertain, and come back. Never leave a multiple-choice answer blank, an educated guess has a real chance; a blank has none.
  • Theory (80 marks, 1 hour 15 minutes). Roughly a minute per mark, which leaves a small buffer to check. Watch the mark allocation: a 4-mark question wants four distinct points, a 1-mark question wants one and no essay.
  • Practical or alternative to practical (40 marks). Same minute-per-mark logic. Read tables and apparatus carefully and record exactly what is asked, with units.

Before you write anything on the theory and practical papers, spend the first minute reading through so nothing surprises you. Then start with a question you are confident on to settle the nerves.

The single biggest timing error is over-investing early. Students write generous, essay-length answers to the first few questions, feel productive, then run out of time for later questions that were just as winnable. The mark allocation is your budget: when a question is worth one mark, give one point and move on, however much more you could say. Glance at the clock at the halfway point of each paper. If you are behind the marks-completed line, speed up rather than hoping to catch up at the end, because the easy marks at the back are the ones you lose when you run out of time.

Decode the command word, then answer it

Under time pressure, the most common avoidable error is answering the wrong question: describing when asked to explain, or writing a paragraph for a one-word "state". Build one habit: underline the command word before you write.

  • State / name: a brief fact, no explanation. Do not pad it.
  • Describe: what happens, the pattern or trend, with no reasons.
  • Explain: the reasons, the because-chain. If your answer has no "because" or "so that", you probably have not explained.
  • Suggest: applied reasoning about an unfamiliar situation; there is room for sensible biology even if you have not seen the exact case.
  • Calculate: show your working and give units.

The 6-mark questions and data questions

The extended 6-mark questions are where good students separate from the rest, and where rushing costs the most. Do not start writing immediately. Spend thirty seconds planning the distinct points you will make, then write them as clearly separated statements so the examiner can tick each one. Six marks means at least six creditable points, usually in a logical order. Data and graph questions:

  • When asked to describe a graph, state the trend and quote figures from the data, with units, to support it. Vague "it goes up" answers leave marks behind.
  • Watch for the command word: describe wants the pattern, explain wants the biology behind it.
  • Read axis labels and units carefully before you interpret anything, and use your ruler to read values accurately.
  • For calculations from data, show your working and always give the unit, percentage-change and magnification questions reward the method even when the final figure slips.

A frequent trap on data questions is the "compare" or "using the data" instruction. If the question tells you to use the data, an answer with no figures in it will not score, however correct the biology. Train yourself to lift a number straight from the table or graph into your sentence: "the rate rose from 2 to 8 bubbles per minute" beats "the rate rose a lot" every time.

Leave no blanks, then check

An empty answer guarantees zero; an attempt sometimes earns marks you did not expect. Two rules:

  • Never leave a blank. If a question stumps you, write your best reasoning. On multiple choice, always select an option. Mark hard questions and return to them rather than freezing.
  • Use your buffer to check. In the last few minutes, return to flagged questions, confirm you answered every part (multi-part questions are easy to half-miss), check your calculations have units, and make sure long answers actually addressed the command word.

Checking is a skill, not a panic. Have a short, fixed routine: first, scan for any blank or half-finished answer and complete it; second, re-read every "explain" answer and confirm it contains reasons, not just description; third, check that calculations carry units and that you used the data where the question told you to. That order puts your remaining minutes on the highest-value fixes first.

If you finish early, do not leave. The most common reason capable students underperform is not lack of knowledge but unforced slips, a part skipped, a unit dropped, a command word missed, and those are exactly what a second read catches. Re-read your longer answers in particular, because that is where extra marks usually hide.

Managing nerves and resetting between papers

Some nerves are normal and even useful; the aim is to keep them at a level where you can think. Practical ways to do that:

  • If your mind goes blank, breathe and move on. Do a question you can answer to rebuild momentum, then return to the hard one. Stuck minutes are wasted minutes.
  • Slow your breathing for a few breaths if panic rises; it genuinely steadies your thinking.
  • Trust your preparation. If you have run the past-paper loop, the paper will feel familiar. Familiarity is the strongest antidote to exam nerves, which is the real reason mock papers matter.
  • Reframe the physical signs. A racing heart and quick breathing are your body getting ready to perform, not a sign that something is wrong. Treat the buzz as fuel rather than a threat and it tends to settle faster.

Between papers, reset rather than re-cram. A frantic flick through notes after one paper tends to spike anxiety for the next. Step away, eat something, do a short light recall of the next paper's key definitions if it helps you, then go in fresh. One paper does not predict the next, so a rough section is not a reason to give up on the rest.
