Year 10 is the first year of the two-year IGCSE Biology course. Most schools cover approximately Topics 1–11 in Year 10, with the remaining topics in Year 11. Building strong foundations now pays dividends in the exam year.

Typical Year 10 progression

Most schools teach topics roughly in syllabus order: cells, movement in and out of cells, biological molecules, enzymes, photosynthesis, human nutrition, transport in plants, transport in humans, diseases and immunity, gas exchange. Some schools rearrange the order to build on concepts more logically.

End-of-year assessments typically test all content covered so far.

Foundation topics to watch

Topics 2–5 (cells, transport, biological molecules, enzymes) are the foundation of the course. If your child does not understand these well, they will struggle with Topics 6–21 because later topics build directly on these concepts. Address any weakness here immediately: do not wait until Year 11.

How to help from the start

Encourage active revision from the beginning: not just reading notes, but practising questions. Even 15 minutes of question practice after each topic test makes a significant difference. Build the habit of marking work against mark schemes and correcting errors.
