How to Revise IGCSE Biology Topic 1: Characteristics and Classification

Topic 1 sets the foundation for organising biological knowledge. The key areas are the characteristics of living organisms (MRS GREN), the five-kingdom classification, the features of vertebrate groups, and how to use dichotomous keys. This topic carries relatively few marks on its own but supports identification and classification throughout the course.

Priority 1: Seven characteristics of living organisms

You must be able to list and define all seven: Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion, Nutrition (MRS GREN). For each, give a biological definition: not a vague everyday meaning. "Excretion" means removal of metabolic waste products, not just "getting rid of things."

Priority 2: Classification and keys

Know the hierarchy: kingdom → phylum → class → order → family → genus → species. Be able to use a dichotomous key (a key with paired questions that narrows down identification). Practise using keys with specimen drawings or photographs.

Priority 3: Five kingdoms and vertebrate groups

Know the distinguishing features of the five kingdoms (animals, plants, fungi, prokaryotes, protoctists). Within vertebrates, know the features that distinguish fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals: especially regarding body covering, method of reproduction, and thermoregulation.
