Cellulose

Definition
A complex carbohydrate (polysaccharide) made of long chains of beta-glucose molecules. It forms the main structural component of plant cell walls, providing rigidity and strength.
What to include in an exam answer
Cellulose is not digested by humans because we lack the enzyme cellulase. In nutrition questions, cellulose is referred to as dietary fibre, which adds bulk to food and stimulates peristalsis.

State the role of cellulose in plants (1 mark): Cellulose forms the cell wall, which provides structural support and prevents the cell from bursting.
