Fatty acid

Definition
One of the two components of a lipid (fat or oil) molecule. Fatty acids are long hydrocarbon chains with a carboxyl group at one end. Three fatty acid molecules combine with one glycerol molecule to form a lipid.
What to include in an exam answer
When describing lipid digestion, state that lipids are broken down into fatty acids AND glycerol. Naming only one product loses a mark.
