Diploid

Definition

A cell or organism that has two complete sets of chromosomes, one set inherited from each parent. In humans, diploid cells contain 46 chromosomes (23 pairs). All body cells are diploid, while gametes are haploid.

What to include in an exam answer

Diploid is written as 2n. In humans, 2n = 46. Body cells are diploid; gametes are haploid (n = 23). Mitosis produces diploid cells; meiosis produces haploid cells.

Example in context

State the diploid number of chromosomes in a human cell (1 mark): 46 (or 23 pairs).
