Transmissible disease

Definition
A disease caused by a pathogen that can be passed from one host to another. Transmission routes include direct contact, droplet infection (coughing/sneezing), contaminated food or water, and vectors such as mosquitoes.
What to include in an exam answer
The 2026 syllabus uses 'transmissible disease' rather than 'infectious disease'. Know transmission methods and control measures for named diseases such as cholera, malaria and HIV/AIDS.
Example in context
Describe how cholera is transmitted (2 marks): Cholera is transmitted through drinking water contaminated with the faeces of infected people, or by eating food washed in contaminated water.
