First, work out what's actually going wrong

When a capable child keeps losing marks in biology, parents often assume the problem is the science itself. Usually it isn't. The two most common causes are a knowledge gap (they genuinely don't know the content) and an exam-technique gap (they know it but can't show it the way the marker wants). These need completely different fixes, so it's worth telling them apart before you spend money or weekends on the wrong one.

If they can't, it's a knowledge gap. If they explain it clearly and confidently but their last paper still came back with red pen all over it, the problem is how they're writing answers, not what they know. That second case is far more common than parents expect, and it's the one that responds fastest.

The exam-technique gap usually comes down to two things: not answering the actual command word in the question (describe, explain, compare and suggest all demand different things), and writing vaguely when the mark scheme wants precise wording. A child who writes a paragraph for a question that asked them to "state two differences" has misread the task, not the biology. One more reassurance before you go further: in our experience the cause is almost never a lack of ability. A child clever enough to be in an IGCSE programme is clever enough to do well in Biology. This is the single most useful thing a non-specialist parent can do, and it takes ten minutes. A syllabus checklist lists every topic the exam can test. You read out a topic; your child tells you what they know about it. You are not marking the science. You are watching their face and their fluency.

Testing recall of definitions

IGCSE Biology rewards precise definitions more than almost any other science. The mark scheme often wants specific words, and a near-miss answer can score zero. The examiner wants the net movement of particles from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration — and the difference between the two versions is real marks. Keep it light. This works best as a short, repeatable habit, not a one-hour interrogation. Ten minutes three times a week, in the car or before dinner, beats a single marathon at the weekend, because the spacing is what fixes the words in memory. A useful trick: revisit the same definitions your child got loose a few days later, not just once. Protecting the revision routine

The thing only a parent can really do is protect the conditions for revision: a consistent time, a quiet space, and a phone that lives in another room for the session. You don't have to know the content to enforce the routine, and frankly the routine matters more than any single study hack.

Help your child build a realistic weekly rhythm rather than relying on cramming. Your job here is the scaffolding, not the teaching: agree the slots, remove the distractions, notice when a slot quietly disappears, and have a calm word about it. That's a parent-sized contribution and it's a real one.

One detail makes a disproportionate difference: a fixed start time. "After dinner" drifts; "7pm" doesn't. Children revise far more reliably against a clock than against a vague intention, and the parent who simply guards the clock removes most of the daily negotiation that exhausts everyone. Using past papers the right way

At some point, revision has to become rehearsal. Past papers are where technique gaps show up, and where they get fixed. You can run this even though you can't mark the biology, because every paper comes with a mark scheme.

  1. Sit them down with a real paper and a timer. Phone elsewhere.
  2. When they finish, hand them the mark scheme and have them mark it honestly against the exact wording.
  3. Ask the one question that matters: "For every mark you lost, did you not know it, or did you know it but write it badly?"

What to say, and what not to say

The emotional side matters as much as the practical side, especially in Form 5 / Year 11 when pressure builds and medicine or dentistry ambitions raise the stakes. A few honest principles help more than a pep talk.

  • Praise the effort and the method, not the intelligence. "You worked through three past papers, that's why this improved" teaches them that grades respond to action. "You're so clever" quietly teaches them that struggle means they're not.
  • Don't compare them to siblings or classmates. It rarely motivates and usually wounds. The only useful comparison is their own last paper.
  • Be honest, not falsely reassuring. "This is hard and you can get better at it" is true and motivating. "You'll be fine, don't worry" can feel dismissive when they're genuinely stuck.
  • Separate the grade from the child. A disappointing mark is information about a topic, not a verdict on them. Treat it as data and they'll bring you the next disappointing mark instead of hiding it.

Growth mindset is real, but only when it's paired with a real plan. Telling a child they can improve, without showing them how, just adds pressure. The checklist, the definitions, the past papers — that's the "how" that makes the encouragement land.

When home support isn't enough

Everything above genuinely helps, and for some children it's enough. But there's an honest limit to what a non-specialist parent can do, and it's worth knowing where it is rather than grinding away past it.
