Definition

A diet that contains all the necessary nutrients in the correct proportions for the body to function properly: carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, water and fibre (roughage). It provides enough energy but not too much.

What to include in an exam answer

In diet questions, always list all seven dietary components. Common exam focus: explaining effects of excess (obesity, heart disease) or deficiency (scurvy from lack of vitamin C, anaemia from lack of iron).

Example in context

Explain what is meant by a balanced diet (2 marks): A balanced diet contains all the required nutrients (carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, water and fibre) in the correct proportions to maintain health.
