White blood cell

Definition
A blood cell that is part of the immune system. There are two main types: phagocytes, which engulf and digest pathogens by phagocytosis, and lymphocytes, which produce antibodies. White blood cells have a nucleus and can change shape.
What to include in an exam answer
Distinguish between phagocytes and lymphocytes. Phagocytes engulf pathogens; lymphocytes produce antibodies. Both are types of white blood cell.
Example in context
Describe the roles of the two types of white blood cell in defence against disease (2 marks): Phagocytes engulf and digest pathogens (phagocytosis). Lymphocytes produce antibodies that bind to antigens on pathogens.
