Amniotic fluid

Definition
The fluid that surrounds and protects the developing fetus inside the amniotic sac in the uterus. It cushions the fetus against physical shocks, supports its weight, maintains a constant temperature and allows the fetus to move freely.
What to include in an exam answer
The main function for exam purposes is protection: amniotic fluid acts as a shock absorber, protecting the fetus from physical damage. It also allows movement, which is important for muscle and bone development.
