Definition
Methods used to prevent pregnancy. These include barrier methods (condoms, which also prevent STI transmission), hormonal methods (the contraceptive pill, containing oestrogen and/or progesterone, which inhibit ovulation), intrauterine devices and natural methods such as abstinence.
What to include in an exam answer
Know at least one hormonal method and one barrier method. The hormonal pill prevents ovulation by maintaining high progesterone levels. Condoms are the only method that also prevents sexually transmitted infections.
Example in context
Explain how the contraceptive pill prevents pregnancy (2 marks): The pill contains hormones (progesterone and/or oestrogen) that inhibit ovulation, so no egg is released. Without an egg, fertilisation cannot occur.
