Ovulation

Definition
The release of a mature egg cell (ovum) from an ovary, which usually occurs around day 14 of the menstrual cycle. The egg then travels along the oviduct towards the uterus, and can be fertilised by a sperm cell during this journey.
What to include in an exam answer
Ovulation is triggered by a surge in the hormone LH, which itself is triggered by oestrogen. The egg can only be fertilised for about 24 hours after ovulation.
