Definition
The variety of living organisms in an area, including the diversity of species, genetic diversity within species, and the diversity of ecosystems. High biodiversity indicates a healthy, stable ecosystem, while low biodiversity may indicate environmental stress.
What to include in an exam answer
Biodiversity is reduced by human activities such as deforestation, pollution and overhunting. Conservation efforts aim to maintain biodiversity. Know that genetic diversity within a species is also part of biodiversity.
Example in context
Explain why maintaining biodiversity is important (2 marks): High biodiversity helps ecosystems remain stable and resistant to change. Loss of one species has less impact when many species are present because other species can fulfil similar roles in the food web.
