Definition
The role of an organism within its ecosystem, including what it feeds on, what feeds on it, and how it interacts with both the living and non-living parts of its environment. No two species can occupy exactly the same niche in the same habitat.
What to include in an exam answer
A niche is about the organism's ROLE, not its LOCATION. Two species competing for the same niche leads to competitive exclusion. Be specific when describing a niche: include diet, predators, and habitat interactions.
Example in context
Distinguish between habitat and niche (2 marks): A habitat is the place where an organism lives. A niche is the role an organism plays in its ecosystem, including its feeding relationships and interactions.
